A paean celebrating the excellencies of the hound dog Blue, the song is classic masculinist sentiment in its memorialization of the unconditional devotion and obedience of “man’s best friend.” Thus, the song of Blue is not only symbolic of the Maxson legacy in particular, but also representative of the collective cultural legacy of socially embattled black men in America.
